Provision for parents on psychiatric inpatient units (POPI)

What is the study about?

We are interviewing parents who have experienced mental health hospitalisation, their children, carers and healthcare staff to better understand the experiences of family visits.

We are specifically interested in how we can improve the experience of these visits for parents and their children.

What is involved in taking part?

Taking part involves an online interview which is adapted to the experiences and age of participants. Before that we meet with you to answer any questions you may have.

  • Initial talk (15 mins: online/phone) to discuss the study before you decide to take part
  • 30-60 minute interview with one or two interviewers from the team (online/ phone or NHS site)

Who can participate?

Parents who are/have been mental health inpatients

Parents of a child 18 or under, that currently staying on a mental health inpatient unit or stayed on one since July 2021 are invited to participate in this study.

Your insights will contribute to improving the experiences of patients who are parents and families visiting psychiatric units. As a thank you for your time we will provide a £10 after the interviews have taken place.

We are responsible for making sure your participation is kept confidential and any data is kept secure and used only in the way described in the information sheet.

Children and young people who visited their parent while they were an inpatient

We invite children and young people under 18 who have visited their parent during their stay in a psychiatric inpatient hospital, to participate in this study.

We hope that it will be a positive experience for the child you care for. Their input will contribute to improving the experiences of families visiting mental health inpatient units. To thank them for their time we give them a £10 voucher after the interviews have taken place.

What does participating look like for children and young people?
You and the child you care for will be invited to a conversation with the research team where you can find out more about the research, ask questions and we can decide whether the study is a good fit for you. If you choose to take part you will both be asked to provide consent and arrange a convenient time for the interview.
The interview will involve asking the child you care for to draw a picture which reflects their visit to hospital – it can take any form they wish. They can do this using an online drawing tool or on paper. We will ask them to show us the picture and describe it. We will also ask them questions about visiting hospital and how it could be improved. The interview will be audio-recorded and later transcribed by the research team for analysis.
